The Big O

Just viewed the ABC 20/20 segment titled ‘Orgasmic Birth’ that aired on January 2, 2009…while definitely intriguing, my opinion is that it paints a seriously unrealistic picture for the expectant women of the world who would of course like to have an orgasmic birth…who wouldn’t?!

I am a big fan of Dr. Christiane Northrup, one of the experts featured in the film. She confirms that an orgasmic response is physically possible, and I agree with both Dr. Northrup and the director Debra Pascali Bonaro when they say that we need to approach birth with a different attitude-see it as a life changing event, create intimacy and provide unconditional love and support along the way…completely concur.

My difficulty is that to promote birth as actually experiencing an orgasm is to set-up women and their partners for disappointment, left with a “we must have done it wrong” experience…
