SUPERMOM SYNDROME

Yesterday Oprah had a mom, a good mom, on her show who accidentally left her toddler in the car – all day – it was 100 degrees that day. The outcome, of course, was tragic. (Unfortunately, a year ago, there was a very similar ‘baby left in car’ tragedy in my hometown of Benicia…)

Why feature this on national television? As a wake-up call: mom’s today are existing in a state of overwhelm, in this case, leading to disaster. Oprah had several important points:

  • This little toddler is now an angel to the world-alerting all drivers that you must pay attention to who, where and what, in order to prevent the unthinkable
  • SLOW DOWN, not the speed that you are driving, rather in focus and attention
  • Husbands are key. They must be involved in offloading mom’s who are trying to do it all, who are, frankly, at risk for losing their minds in the process

Oprah doesn’t know it, but McMoyler Method has been teaching these 3 points to expectant parents for years. ‘Husband as essential to the process’ both at the hospital and at home is our underlying tenet…We are committed to opening their eyes wide, bursting a few bubbles along the way, alerting them to the predictable overwhelm that is waiting; and how husbands can make a difference.

The next DVD project in line for my partners and I to produce is on Newborn Care and Safety. It is crucial that expectant parents receive this information before their babies are born. Good intentions to learn CPR etc. go out the window once the babies arrive home!
